About

Mission

The Black Graduate Student Organization (BGSO) at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) provides graduate students with cultural, academic, and professional support. BGSO is committed to inspiring its members to be active leaders in both the CMU and Pittsburgh communities.

BGSO members represent various ethnic backgrounds and academic disciplines across the CMU campus. BGSO believes that under-represented students and faculty members deserve a voice in all aspects of academic life on our campus community. We are committed to support, service and fellowship.

  1. We must support ourselves in the continual endeavor to achieve success.

  2. We must remain faithful to our cause and always serve those in need.

  3. We must always remember to attack problems that we may face with good grace and strong fellowship.

Vision

  1. Recruit and retain under-represented students and faculty members.

  2. Welcome and counsel new graduate students and faculty members.

  3. Establish formal lines of communication among under-represented graduate students and faculty members, the administration, and alumni.

  4. Provide networking opportunities to graduate students with alumni and other professionals from the public, private, and non-profit organizations.
